SPEAKERS

Gail Green

Gail Green is co-founder and director of Living Adventure Inc., located in Bayfield, WI. A strong current of entrepreneurialism flows through her years of kayak guiding, teaching and outdoor leadership resulting in the creation of this successful outdoor adventure company that specializes in sea kayaking programs in the Apostle
Islands National Lakeshore. Sea kayaking instructor training is a focus of Gail’s
work with the American Canoe Association where she coaches and mentors upcoming instructors. You’ll catch her occasionally presenting and
teaching at various symposia, trade shows and sea kayaking club events across the country. Gail’s international sea kayaking experiences have included a diplomatic expedition to Russia’s Lake Baikal, an expedition to photograph humpback
whales near Maui, Hawaii and a recent paddling project with a local sea kayaking organization on the north Brittany coast of France. Her most notable effort in inter-cultural program development, now in its twelfth season, is establishing a series of sea kayaking and art adventures to Mexico’s Yucatan coast.

Marsha Henson
I have been working in paddlesports since 2001. The first thing that drew me to kayaking was the ability to become part of the waterscape in all its varying conditions. Since living on Tybee Island for the past sixteen years, I have sought everyway I can to be a part of the waterways and their great beauty. I am a painter and sea kayaking seemed like a logical place to go and find creative inspiration. Once I got involved in the sport, it became my favorite part of my life. Now I feel that I lead a lifestyle that is completely intertwined with my involvement in paddlesports.
My involvement in SKG allows me to introduce kayaking to visitors on a daily basis. Tybee Island has become known for its warm waters, laid back atmosphere and chance for some rough water training in milder conditions. This combination allows me to work with students year round, including coaching beginner, intermediate and advanced paddlers in ACA and BCU courses. In the fall, every year I host a BCU and skills symposium. Throughout the year I develop and execute camping programs built around kayak and canoe instruction for several private schools, team building programs and custom instruction of all kinds.
Presentation Description.
Georgia’s Barrier Islands are well worth a visit and have been extraordinarily protected by remaining in private ownership and then donated to federal or state agencies for continued protection.
During the fall and winter months Sea Kayak Georgia folk always love a journey paddling down the Georgia coast. This time of year we journey from north to south to take advantage of the prevailing winds.
I will present a slide show depicting sea kayaking on the coast of Georgia, combined with my paintings inspired by these travels followed by images from instructing groups, classes and symposiums.

GUEST COACHES

We are very fortunate to have three coaches lending their experience for our symposium.   Joining us will be Jean Totz from Sweetwater Kayaks and

Marsha Henson (see bio above) from Sea Kayak Georgia, and Gail Green from Living Adventures Inc.(see bio above).  We are very lucky to have these three quality instructors join our already stellar staff!

Jean Totz

BCU A3 Level 2 Coach Trainer & Assessor BCU Level 3 Coach/Sea Kayak BCU 4 Star Award/Sea Kayak BCU 5 Star Training/Sea Kayak TRSA Whitewater Training President of Sweetwater Kayaks, Jean is also the Director of the Florida Gulf Coast International Sea Kayak Symposium at Sweetwater Kayaks. Jean received her Level 3 BCU Coach (Advanced Open Water) Award and 5 star training (Tidal, Surf and Leadership skills) at Nigel Dennis' Anglesey Sea and Surf Center in Holyhead Wales. Jean has paddled Whitewater on the Tellico River in Tenn. and the Nantahala and the Ocoee rivers in North Carolina. Her passion is coaching and open water kayaking; "Experiencing the dynamics of the sea along with the wind, waves, and current from a kayak is exhilarating and challenging." Some of Jean's paddling highlights have been: the Sucia Islands just off of the Orca Island in Washington State; 5 star training in Vancouver Island and in Maine; 25 Thousand Islands of the coast of Sweden, and Baja Mexico. She has coached at symposiums for New York Kayak Company, Sea Kayak Georgia, Aqua Adventure in San Diego; Body Boat Blade in Washington State, Barrier Island in North Carolina and Bar Harbor Maine. Her most recent kayak race involved paddling 68 miles in 22 hours as part of the Water Tribe Challenge in central west coast Florida.

MEN WILL DO ANYTHING TO COME TO LADIES OF THE LAKE!

DANNY MONGNO

The role of Field Marketing for Werner Paddles allows Danny Mongno plenty of time on the water.  Although based out of the mountains of Asheville NC it is in his home on wheels that he travels the country, coaching from symposium to symposium and working with paddlers to better understand the magic a Werner Paddle can create on the water.  A paddler for over 15 years it was not the search for a career that landed Danny where he is, it is the lifestyle and the chance to be a part of the family.  Danny is 33 years old, not as short as he looks and spends his spare time running and hanging with his dog Schven.  Impex Kayaks, Pyranha Kayaks, Astral Buoyancy, NRS and Immersion Research supply the best kayaking gear made to keep this machine moving along.

Danny Mongo’s Man Camp
Don’t leave your partner at home! They too can enjoy some instruction away from the symposium with Danny at Mens Camp.

Forward Stroke.  Sat 1pm $40.00

It sounds silly but we all need help with the most basic movement in kayaking, going forward.  Join us as we break down the proper body motions needed to drive your kayak more efficiently.

Open Water Adventure. Sat 2pm $40.00

Let's go for a paddle.  Well come on it can't be that easy now!  As we get out on the water we will set up scenarios that will challenge out group management skills.  You don't need advanced conditions to think like an advanced leader, so bring an open mind.  ( Rescue kit and clothing for extended exposure and immersion is suggested.)

Introduction to the Surf Zone. Sun 10am $40.00

Surfing sea kayaks can be a lot of fun, however it is not often in the Mid West we get the conditions that warrant long glassy rides.  We do however deal with surf landing and launchings and paddling in advanced conditions quite often.  Let's take a look at the basics and where to get started when the lake turns ugly on us.  ( This course will be a theory course and we will get plenty of work in the event we do not get conditions.)

 Rescues- A new look. Sun 1pm $40.00

Throw out everything you know about rescues and let's just have some fun.  What works for one person does not always work for the other, so let's learn from each other and add some new rescue skills.  Bracing and rolling will be touched on as well as a long look at group management and what rescues to use before we ever have a swimmer.
