We are so happy to welcome back Barry Blanchard! Described as the "Bonatti of the Rockies," and Canada's greatest alpinist, the Canmore-based writer and photographer spends his time romping around the globe in search of adventure on high alpine faces. Barry has been featured ice climbing in the IMAX Extreme film and Vertical Limit. His exploits include the first ascent of the epic North Pillar of North Twin, first ascents in winter on the north faces of Les Droites and two successful expeditions to Mt. Everest. In 2002 he opened a new route on the Emperor Face of Mt. Robson. It was Barry's seventh start over many years, and partners Eric Dumerac and Philippe Pellet insisted on the name Infinite Patience (VI, WI5, M5, 5.9). In addition to recent routes on the southwest face of East Kahiltna Peak, the southeast ridge of Mt. Asperity and the north face of Bravo Peak, Barry lists as one of his, and wife Catherine’s, greatest accomplishments the birth of their daughter Rosemary in November 2004.

BEN CLARK
At 19, I abandoned a career in architecture for an unknown path that I hoped would lead me to the top of Everest. Curiously enough, it did in 2003 at 23 years old. That path also led me everywhere in between and into some places I could’ve gone and some places I can’t believe I’ve gone…ever been to “The Pavement” in Nairobi, Kenya? Shhhhhh!!!!!
My twenties have been packed full of mileage, it’s cool to be in my last year of them and seeing more mountain ranges on the horizon instead of less. Clinging to the mountain lifestyle as much as the mountainside, I’ve woken up in as many places as possible and now call Telluride, Co. home. It feels good to know these mountains.
These days my resume is a collection of the experiences I always dreamed of living; backcountry turns in the morning, ice climbing in the afternoon, winter days bouldering and hopping on a rope in the desert, long runs in the dry summer mountains and enchaining peaks that once took entire days to climb. The alpine climbing is still sketchy and the mountains sometimes turn me away. I respect my partners and wouldn’t have these experiences without them or the support of sponsors.
Our expeditions always include covering a lot of ground at altitude. That means we have to be light enough for adventurous and technical alpine climbing and likely on a high mountain somewhere remote. To ski off and cover our ground safely in style is the epitomy of my dreams. Every now and then I wake up in the middle of that dream…we are carving turns, we have been climbing ice, we encounter some rock and we’re in the Himalaya and it’s now.
And we couldn’t be happier...join us sometime: www.skithehimalayas.com
RAPHAEL SLAWINSKI
Raphael Slawinski
Raphael is a professor of physics and of Canadian Rockies’ choss.
He enjoys a broad range of activities: besides alpinism, his hobbies include bouldering, sport climbing, ice climbing and drytooling. We are excited to welcome Rapheal back to the Michigan Ice Fest to update us on his latest adventures!
MARK WILFORD
Mark is considered one of the most proficient and diverse alpinist/rock climbers in the world. With more than 30 years of experience, he has accumulated a long resume of bold rock ascents, alpine solos, Alaskan climbs and Himalayan expeditions. Among his most notable climbs are the first American solo ascent of the Eiger North Face, a first ascent route on Nameless Tower, a winter solo of the Diamond on Long’s Peak and first ascents in Alaska’s Saint Elias Range with Barry Blanchard. Although he has participated in sport climbing and ice-climbing events, Mark is considered a staunch traditionalist when it comes to the style and ethics of climbing.
“Whatever that means these days,” he jokes. “I just like to climb. I just love climbing.” While Mark is not presenting this year, he has been a strong supporter of Ice Fest for a long time. Mark will be instructing for us again this year and we are lucky to have him back!
